Warning: Infection
This press release that contains the Word Virus, as indeed do they all. The word doesn't die. It shouldn't
and can't. It festers and occupies and colonises, and you can't help it. So look grateful. It's the least you
can do.
From Arcadia to Libertatia... and thence to Alpha Centauri...
Following the withered sicknote techno of B60_02, 'Red Night', Ruaridh Law aka TVO presents an album of
mutations by himself and the artist Covered In Sand, aka Shifted, 'Red Night Variations'.
Tamaghis... Ba'Dan... Yass-Waddah... Waghdas... Naufana... Ghaddis... Building a seventh city.
Drawing again from the source material's inspiration, William S. Burroughs' 'Cities Of The Red Night',
the reworks inhabit an ambivalent eigenstate, placed somewhere between drone texture, techno meter,
industrial clatter and noise palette. TVO's five reworks open with 'Outside The Brighton Church', a slowed-
up 4/4 workout that swiftly introduces elements of ethereal presence and epic chord washes. Driving and yet
restrained, it sets the tone. 'Super 8 In Glasgow Tenement' ups the pace and withholds detail, stripping back
tonality and pushing glassy sound design to the fore.
'Albert Hall Chess Boxing' takes the ultra-minimal moves of labelmate Production Unit's 'ICU Tracks' and
distills them into Reichian raindrop pulses, while 'Concrete And Steel, Peckham' evokes classic Detroit
strings at something of a remove, punctuated by the tapdance of a locust swarm over 11 glorious minutes.
Digital bonus 'The Male Is In Room 2, Stranraer' ends matters on a visceral, pounding high, showcasing
Law's avowed techno chops.
“Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.”
As Shifted, the remixer of side B should need little introduction. Gracing labels such as Mote Evolver, Our
Circula Sound and his own Avian imprint, he's an acclaimed and hugely successful member of techno's new
breed. Covered In Sand depicts his experimental work.
Opener 'Ba'Dan' is morbidly threatening, like a whispered incantation. It's clear that a keen understanding of
classic industrial music informs his interpretations, particularly in the dry, monolithic percussion that marches
to a funereal beat and the steadfast refusal to submit to change, each piece stating its case then remaining
impassive for its duration. 'Yass-Waddah' suppurates like pale chemical fires, a barely present kick drum
marking time as though it were about to run out.
'Many Lifetimes' is the longest of his pieces, sketching reverberated memories of strings against bleak
low background pulses. Lastly, 'Naufana' thuds an overtly industrial drum machine loop over yet more
widescreen dark ambience and white noise scrawlings.
“This book is dedicated to the Ancient Ones”
'Red Night Variations' represents the convergence of two rotten vines from the same root. They will not bear
delicious fruit, but its offerings are a strange and addictive mutant that enjoys you as much as you devour it.
Eat up.
Each tape will come with a DVD of audio and audiovisual content. TVO's full A/V appearance at the Royal
Albert Hall for The Wire Magazine's 2012 event is included, as is a long-form audio piece, 'Metaphysics
For Beginners', the 40-minute stretched sound of a tree being felled. Seriously. As is now traditional for
Broken60, the physical package will include a host of inserts, trinkets and paraphernalia courtesy of art
director David Fyans aka Erstlaub.
Broken60 is the tape sub-label of Broken20. Its other releases thusfar are 10-20's magisterial 'Magnet
Marsh' and TVO's 'Red Night'. Further Broken60 releases are a beat tape of saturated gamelan hip hop
jams from a faraway contact, a reissue of an essential voodoo drumming field recording and some reclaimed
pirate radio tapes.
Each physical Broken60 purchase comes with a code to download digital versions of the tracks.
All downloads will contain the album twice – once with individual tracks and once with two long tracks
entitled simply 'Side A' and 'Side B'. The latter have been recorded from tape directly, so the original
experience is maintained in all its ferric glory.

During the final days of writing my thesis I listened to this album on repeat for hours at a time. It was like being suspended in one eternal moment while all that changed around me were the ripples and eddies of a slowly meandering river. catharina_bee
